Community, Enterprise and OCA: editions and licenses

What each edition of Odoo brings, how the licenses work and how the OCA modules fit into both editions.

Before you start

No preparation needed. If you are choosing an edition, list the applications and the functions your company needs.

Step by step

1. Open core

Odoo follows the open core model: the core of the system is free software, and the company that created it, Odoo SA, offers a commercial edition on top of it. Since version 9, the two editions share the same base, so a company can start with one and grow into the other.

2. Odoo Community

Odoo Community is free software under the LGPLv3 license: it can be used, studied and adapted without license fees, for any number of users. It brings the main applications (Sales, Purchases, Inventory, Invoicing, CRM, Projects, Point of Sale, Manufacturing, Employees and others), and the OCA modules add many more functions to it, including the Brazilian localization.

3. Odoo Enterprise

Odoo Enterprise adds to the Community base the applications and functions of Odoo SA (such as full accounting, studio, helpdesk, electronic signature and the mobile app), hosting and support from Odoo SA and the version upgrades, under a subscription per user. A company that starts with Community can add Enterprise later, keeping its data.

4. OCA modules in both editions

OCA modules are free, mostly under the AGPLv3 or LGPLv3 licenses, and work with Community and with Enterprise. The Brazilian localization is one of them: the same NF-e, taxes and reports serve both editions. In this documentation, each guide and scenario shows the edition it applies to.

Expected result

You know what each edition brings, how the licenses work and that the OCA modules, including the Brazilian localization, work in both.
